Cold But Delicious
I love hot summer days spent in the company of those who are dear to me. Fond memories of creative tools used by our elders to provide some cool down when the heat was extreme. We were allowed to push up the water bill a bit and run under the sprinkler. I remember homemade ice-lollies and plain old vanilla ice-cream if we were lucky. As the years have gone by, I discovered that there are more cold options you can eat than just ice-lollies and ice-cream. Allow me to share some of my favorite cold meals with you.
There might be nothing more comforting than a steamy hot bowl of soup, but keep an open mind. When summer comes around, no one wants to spend time at a hot stove, but still craves something nutritious and wholesome. Gazpacho has gained popularity over the last few years and did not disappoint those who tried it for the first time. Adding soaked bread to this dish helps create body and texture that resembles a hearty soup. I’ve realized that letting all your ingredients soak together for a while, increases the flavor. I hope you are pleasantly surprised when you try your first cold soup.
Many people believe that gelato and ice-cream are exactly the same and that gelato is just the French word for ice-cream. Even though the language part is true, there are many differences between the two. Gelato has a smoother, cleaner texture compared to the richness and heavy texture of regular ice-cream. You might find that gelato is best served at a higher temperature than regular ice-cream. You will find much less fat content in gelato, as the ratio of milk to cream is higher for milk. This is why you get that fresh clean taste.
I feel like salad and summer are always a perfect pair and this always seem like a sure way to get my vegetables in during the hot months. There really are no limits when it comes to creating a variety of salads. As you will see on this website, it only takes some creativity and the will to explore to come up with amazing salad recipes. You can serve a salad as a side or a main dish by tweaking a few ingredients. If you are having it as a main meal, you might want to add some protein so that you are fuller for longer. Chickpeas, beans and lentils are great ingredients for a meatless yet protein rich option.
What is better than a refreshing, healthy drink to cool you down during the summer? Now, imagine that drink can provide you with a lot of your daily nutrients and vitamins. Does it get any better than that? Yes it does. It even tastes amazing. Smoothies are a great to experiment with and you should try some out of the ordinary combinations. Green smoothies are probably the most popular amongst all, but this does not mean that you have to only have those. You can make yourself a refreshing strawberry or citrus smoothie if you want. Add lots of ice and frozen fruit to make it extra cool.
Variety is the source of good food and good health. I can across this type of eating when visiting a Middle Eastern friend of mine. Instead of cooking one big meal, I was amazed at the variety of smaller, delicious options. It’s somewhat like a platter, but each dish is served in its own plate or bowl. It can be a simple as a bowl of olives and cubes of cheese. Add some pita bread, hummus and any other star dishes you love to serve. This is great for a summer party or even just inviting friends over. It’s a great conversation started as instead of explaining one dish, you will have the privilege of taking a tour of the dishes you served.
There is something special about the summer months and enjoying delicious refreshing meals is where the good times are at. Summer only lasts so long and you don’t want to miss the experience and memories you could create. Pack a picnic basket and head out to the beach or the park. Make this summer the best one ever by spending time with your loved ones and share your new dishes with them. You could host an event and ask all your friends and family members to bring a dish, but it has to be a cold one. It could be interesting and also a lot of fun. There is nothing more memorable than a summer well spent.
