Cooking with three ingredients or less
There is no reason for cooking to be a complicated and tiring task. Sometimes, you do not have much in your pantry, or perhaps you are just not in the mood for a drawn out cooking marathon. This is when you pull your recipes that does not require a complicated road map to the finish line. Would you believe me if I told you all you need to create a great meal is 3 ingredients? There are some basic ingredients most of us have at home. These include oil, spices and general herbs. Having your basics on hand is enough to help you prepare an awesome meal.
Here are some of the foods I like to create when cooking simply:
There is no doubt in my mind that fish does not need much done to it in order to make a delicious meal. The flavors are already there and all that is left to you is to enhance those natural flavors. Drizzle with olive oil and add some of your favorite spices. If you want a complete meal, you can simply add some sautéed or grilled vegetable for a complete meal.
For those who are trying to minimize their meat consumption, sweet potatoes are a great option. Although I can eat a baked sweet potato just with sprinkled cinnamon, I might fancy something a bit more adventurous. You can stuff it with what you have on hand or even go as far as adding an egg and some onions to make a delicious fritter.
Does anyone of you remember egg salad on bread? Let’s just say it was delicious, but we can do so much more with limited ingredients. You already know that I love omelettes and it is one of the easiest and most satisfying meals you can make in a flash. It’s hearty and does not need a lot of ingredients. You can always get a bit fancy with your omelettes, but adding some chopped green onions and sharp cheddar cheese will taste just as great.
Not everyone loves pork. There are those who just don’t enjoy the taste and there are some who don’t know how to prepare it and what to pair it with. Simply adding some sautéed cabbage with cranberry sauce as a side can instantly change your mind. The flavor in pork can be rather intense and thus it is a good idea to add simple ingredients when preparing a meal.
I am not going to suggest you eat chicken breasts, boiled broccoli and brown rice. It might work for bodybuilders, but I enjoy a bit more flavor in my meals. I would much rather prefer a chicken caprese salad. Simply bake your chicken, add some mozzarella cheese on top with a slice of tomato and you have some delicious meal. Now, if you have some basil on hand, sprinkle those on top and you might be the next MasterChef.
Who knew you could make a tasty sweet treat quickly and efficiently? A cup of peanut butter, a cup of sugar and an egg can make one delicious cookie. If peanut butter is not really your thing, you can easily make some shortbread cookies for your late night cup of tea. All you need is 1 cup of butter, 1 ½ cups of flour and a ½ cup of icing sugar. These will literally change your life.
Show me someone who does not like ice-cream and I’ll show you someone who has not lived life! Homemade ice-cream seems like a dream to many new cooks, but what if I told you that you can make it quickly and easily? All you need is a good processor, frozen fruit (I prefer mangoes) and a can of coconut milk. Simply blend your frozen fruit until crumbly, add coconut milk and blend until desired consistency and freeze. You can freeze this for around 3-6 hours and allow another half an hour to thaw before scooping. Vanilla ice-cream would seem boring after you taste this.
My goal with this post was to show you that cooking is not complicated at all. You can come up with your own arsenal of quick recipes over time. Cooking is an enjoyable process, but there are times when you believe reaching for the take-out menu is a quick option. Now you know that it can be faster and easier to just whip up something in your own kitchen. Keep your basics stocked up and you won’t need to call the food delivery guy again.
